Albion Garden

As part of Groundwork's Community Environment Programme and delivered in partnership with the New Deal for Communities, a derelict site has been transformed into a fun and unique community garden with an informal play space by residents on the Albion Estate, Charlestown. The Garden was funded by NDC, HMRF, Awards for allLiving Spaces and ERDF

The site, previously a block of flats that had been demolished, had become an eyesore and was hazardous. The Albion Residents Association approached Groundwork for help tidying up the area and putting it to better use. Design workshops and door-to-door consultation determined that the community's preference was for an informal play space with seating for older residents. The building of the garden was a real community effort, with residents young and old providing designs for sculptures to be included in the garden, sharing stories about their dogs for the wall mural and helping out on planting days.

The project has turned a corner of the estate into a community resource. Its bright colours and attractive designs have improved the general appearance of the estate, vandalism has reduced and the residents group has gone on to take on other projects around the estate.
