Alleygate Toolkit

Alleygate guide cover

The Charlestown and Lower Kersal NDC alley gate scheme has been in place for some years now and has made a great impact on the lives of many residents.

Burglary to the rear of terraced properties has been greatly reduced and the scheme has allowed many Alleyways to once again become used as communal space. Residents have come together to enhance their alleyway and create beautiful and safe community spaces for all to enjoy! Here is what some residents have to say;

  • "The alley gate scheme initially was a great success. It made the community feel safer, and brought neighbours together."
  • "When the community works together the alleyway gating scheme can be a great success."
  • "When our Grandchildren walked through our gate, our alleyway became as if by magic, their very own secret garden. They loved helping with the planting and building castles in the sand box.
    Having an alleyway means that we are now able to enjoy growing plants, shrubs and flowers. Each day we are able to see the newly opened flowers, that are all bringing a variety of colours into our lives."
  • "It has made our area a much more interesting, cheerful and colourful place to live.
    Our yards are very small and so it is really great, to be able to walk up to the top area and enjoy the sunshine whilst sitting on a comfortable seat."
  • "It has been very encouraging to see the bees and butterflies very busily collecting pollen and the new beginnings of insect life on the nasturtiums."
  • "With the alleyways gated, it has afforded us a secure and pleasent area. Especially since most of the houses are unoccupied."

If you live in a gated alleyway (or one that is about to be gated), support to form a group is available from the NDC Community Involvement Team. Members of the team can help you to:

  • Consult with your neighbours
  • Hold meetings
  • Set up your group
  • Put together a plan of action and
  • Apply for funding.

Whatever ideas you may have for improving your alleyway, the toolkit is a step-by-step guide that explains how you can turn your gated alleyway into an attractive communal space that can be enjoyed by you, your family, neighbours and friends.

The Down Your Alley toolkit has been designed to support local residents to form small community groups to turn neglected alleyways into shared community spaces with planters, hanging baskets, benches, and outdoor play space. The Down Your Alley toolkit is available to download here.
