Brindle Heath and Cobden Street areas

St Thomas' Church

The area
The Brindle Heath area has a modern private housing estate, as well as a small number of older private terraces around the Charles Street area.  The area also takes in the top of the Broughton/Cromwell Road corridor which is home to the impressive grade II listed 19th century gothic church, St Thomas’, and the listed Co-op building which has been redeveloped into modern apartments.  The Cobden Street area is filled with a mixture of small businesses mainly in older buildings, many of which used to be mills.

Brindle Heath Lagoons There is a Showmans’site and also a Travellers’ site situated along Duchy Road to the north of the modern housing estate, and the Brindle Heath lagoons provide a green oasis which is popular with anglers and walkers.

Local amenities
Salford Shopping City is close by and the broad range of shops in central Manchester can be reached by car or public transport within 10 minutes.

St Thomas’ Church is located on the opposite side of the A6 roundabout to Shopping City.

NDC Activities

Community
A strong community group has been built up in the Charles Street area, supported by NDC Community Development Team member, Tony Roberts.  

St Thomas’ church continues to be supported by the NDC programme as part of the Community Facilities Strategy.

Community Safety Initiatives
Many businesses benefited from a round of Business Security Grants that were available in the earlier years of the NDC programme.  This has led to improved security in many of the businesses around the Cobden Street area.

Alleygates have been installed in the Charles Street area to make homes more secure and bring peace of mind to residents.

Children, Young People and Education
Although none of the NDC area’s schools are within this neighbourhood, children have access to 4 primary schools (St George’s, St Sebastian’s, Lower Kersal, and Charlestown) as well the Albion High School.

A number of children’s play areas are within easy reach at Strawberry Road, Whit Lane, Seaford Road, Riverbank Park on Littleton Road and Kingsley Avenue.

Several playgroups, parent and toddler groups and out of school groups are active within the NDC area.

Grumpy (Greater Manchester Play Resource Centre) is located nearby on Langley Road and is full of imaginative art and craft ideas for individual or group activities.

Young people can take part in a range of activities co-ordinated by Salford Youth Service and NDC at the Beacon Centre on London Street, Lower Kersal Young People’s Group based at St Aidan’s Church, Oliver’s Youth Club off Langley Road, and the Amber Project based on Whit Lane.

Physical Environment
Residents on Charles Street worked with the Community Development Team to arrange for the overgrown area at the rear of the homes to be cleared,. new railings have been installed, the floor has been cleared of weeds and then resurfaced.

The area has a heritage associated with the Jewish community, and in recent years an overgrown Jewish cemetery near the top of Brindle Heath Road was cleared and made accessible.

Brindle Heath lagoons, sited along Duchy Road, is a tranquil fishing and nature reserve that is a real hidden gem.  As a result of high levels of interest from residents on Duchy Estate, Whit Lane Estate and Broughton Anglers, NDC has been working with Groundwork to look at the potential for improving the lagoons.

Local businesses can benefit from Business Improvement Grants which can assist with the refurbishment of business properties within the area.
