Neighbourhood Management

An Intensive Neighbourhood Plan (INMP) has been produced for the Charlestown and Lower Kersal Riverside areas to support communities during redevelopment. The plan was launched in the community in Summer 2006. Key successes include:

  • Clearance of greenery in ginnels in Lower Kersal
  • Resident support day on Littleton Road
  • Probation clean up days on Whit Lane
  • Bin chaining on Whit Lane
  • Drama project with PCSO’s on Whit Lane
  • Chicanes installed on Whit Lane
  • Improved channels of communication between residents and police
  • Development of the Neighbourhood Tool Kit

Due to the success of the Intensive Neighbourhood Plan to support communities during redevelopment; in November 2008 Neighbourhood Management was rolled out across the NDC area.

Neighbourhood Management aims to:

  • Provide support & information to residents
  • Ensure that residents feel safe and that the areas remain well managed
  • Target additional support to vulnerable groups such as the elderly
  • Actively apply intensive neighbourhod management for issues that require a multi-strategy, multi-agency approach to tackle

Neighbourhood Management consists of 3 key elements:

  • Information & advice
  • Updating the rehousing information pack to provide advice on financial support
  • Involving the community in the design of new housing
  • Maximising the employment opportunities for local people with the developer partner
  • Community support
  • Support from the Intensive Neighbourhood Management Team via walkabouts, surgeries and face to face contact with residents to ascertain issues and develop a plan of action
  • Dedicated worker from Age Concern to support older residents
  • Targeted policing of the redevelopment areas and other areas in the NDC area
  • Reporting of crime including threat to persons and property (including anti-social behaviour) and follow up action
  • Reporting of vandalism and criminal damage including reporting and follow up
  • Support measures for vulnerable residents
  • Action against specific issues of concern
  • Identification of actions that help develop community cohesion and improve community safety
  • Managing the environment
  • Improved security through alleygating
  • Environmental cleanliness including street cleaning and fly tipping issues
  • Maintenance of the physical environment including lighting and street condition (roads and pavements)
