Crime and Community Safety Strategy
|
New Deal for Communities has launched its second Strategy and Action Plan for reducing crime and promoting community safety in Charlestown & Lower Kersal from 2006-2009. The strategy identifies the priorities from the community, and proposes a range of interventions to address them. If you wish to receive a copy call 0800 587 7883 or download it here. |
Good news for the area
Over a two year period, overall crime in the Salford area has fallen by about 30%. Vehicle crime is down by about the same percentage – 30%, and domestic burglaries are down by over 50%. Virtually every type of crime has fallen or remained constant.
Investment and action so far
£1.6m has been invested so far in a number of projects to reduce crime and the fear of crime:-
- 12 CCTV cameras have been installed in key locations across the area
- An anti-burglary initiative has made secure well over 900 vulnerable properties
- The recruitment of a police sergeant a community safety officer and 2 police constables who are dedicated to the New Deal area and are working hard to make it a safe and attractive place to live
- Approximately £120,000 has been invested in 56 commercial premises to help them improve their security, the grants being matched by contributions from the businesses
- A range of small scale crime prevention projects, such as the provision of subsidised crook locks, has been carried out
- Operation Zone, an intensive police initiative, has targeted ‘hot spots’ in order to reduce juvenile nuisance and related crime
- A Crime and Community Safety Handbook providing information on projects, and contact numbers of agencies working on crime and community safety measures in the area, has been published
Other measures planned over the next 3 years include a team of highly visible, uniformed individuals responsible for looking after the environment, deterring anti-social behaviour and reducing crime and the fear of crime; the installation of alley gates on a number of streets to deter burglars and provide recreational space for residents; and finally the commissioning of research into alcohol abuse and the links with anti-social behaviour.
