Good news stories

During the summer of 2008 Debi Young and Kerry Williams set out on a mission to provide quality childcare for children in Charlestown and the surrounding area.  After a long and exhausting summer and with the very much needed help of Sandra Young (NDC Child Development Officer), Big Steps Playgroup opened its doors for the first time on 10 October 2008, where parents could go along with their children and join in with some of the activities that would be taking place.

During the year Big Steps has been joined by a team of volunteers who work alongside Debi and Kerry and have also gained level 2 NVQ’s in Children’s Care, Learning and Development and are currently studying for their level 3.

With a team of great staff came a group of wonderful children who have enjoyed Big Steps activities, which included lots of learning opportunities that have developed not only their Intellectual skills but also Social, Emotional, Physical and Creative skills.  Big Steps have followed the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, as used in schools, which has helped the transition from Playgroup setting to School setting.

The first group of children to graduate from Big Steps Playgroup, in July 2009, are going to be greatly missed by staff and children alike as Big Steps like to see themselves as ‘One Big Happy Family!’ where each and every child is as important as the next.

It is hoped that Big Steps Playgroup will continue to go from strength to strength and the second year will bring as many memories, wonderful children, supportive families and challenges as the first!

If your child is 2 or over and you would like a place at Big Steps Playgroup we open Monday to Friday 1 – 2.50pm, St Sebastian’s Community Centre, why not come along and register your child?
