August 2007 saw the start on site for the Littleton Road Gateway Terraces Block Improvement Scheme. The scheme is set to improve 270 terrace properties on Gerald Road, Romney Street, Milnthorpe Street, Suffolk Street Levens Street and Littleton Road. The work comprises the following to the front elevations

  • Brick cleaning
  • Repointing
  • Renewal of rainwater goods
  • Renewal of facia boards
  • Renewal of front garden walls and surfaces
  • Cleaning repair and repainting of windows and doors as appropriate

In addition the rear yard walls will be renewed and for gable end properties the gable end yard wall will be heightened to match the height of the alley gates, in order to further improve security for residents.

Finally, the distinctive Co-operative building that heads the area of terraces at the junction of Gerald Road and Littleton Road will also benefit from external cleaning and repointing works. In addition to dramatically improving the building's appearance, it is hoped that the works will act as a catalyst for the reoccupation of a building that has lain empty for a few years, bringing life back to this important local landmark at the heart of the neighbourhood.

It is expected that the scheme will have an enormous impact on the appearance of the local area, improving properties that front onto two main roads and several interior streets. It will benefit an area that has long aspired to the sort of investment needed to help strengthen and sustain the housing market and the local community. Running parallel to the works is the opportunity for residents to come together to form alleyway groups and apply for further funding to green the alleyway, turning it from a means of access to a useable community space.

The contractors carrying out the improvement works on behalf of New Deal, Salford City Council and Salix Homes are G & J Seddon Ltd. Contract management and design services are provided by Urban Vision.

Earlier this year four young people from the local area were given the opportunity to undertake work experience on the Littleton Road Gateway Terraces and Blandford Road Area Terraces  block improvement schemes. Each individual received experience in a variety of areas including painting, joinery and aiding the electricians. Seddons' resident liaison officer David Unsworth said " we were very please with them - their attitude and the work they carried out was excellent from each of the lads".
