Lower Kersal Estate Green Space Improvements
In addition to the proximity of Salford Sports Village and the Riverside Park, the Lower Kersal Estate has benefitted from a package of environmental improvements to green spaces throughout the estate.
The flagship project has been the improvements made to the Kingsley Avenue Circle (please see dedicated project page). In keeping with Kingsley Avenue, works to the spaces at Littleton Road, Shirley Avenue and Oaklands Road have helped improve security and appearance for surrounding properties as well as improving the image of the wider estate.
All of these spaces were to varying degrees a blight on the local area. Due to poor security measures and lack of a sense of community ownership, the spaces became a magnet for anti social behaviour with frequent incursion of vehicles, dog fouling and fly tipping. Groundwork carried out extensive consulation with the surrounding properties with the aim of finding out exactly what the issues were, how they use the space and what they see as the best use of the space in future. The proposals concentrated on improving security through attractive fencing or bollards, improving the visual appeal through contoured landscaping, planting and high quality materials and improving amenety through provision of additional parking or access to neighbouring property.
The works although small in scale have had a large impact on the area due to the way in which the community have been engaged, the prominence of some of the spaces a along major route as Littleton Road and the high quality and inventive design employed throughout the process.l
