Whit Lane Community Garden

An excellent example of partnership working is delivering a new community garden on the Whit Lane estate.

The Community Environmental Programme presented the opportunity to further improve areas of unused and exposed green space in between the blocks of flats over and above that proposed as part of the Whit Lane Environmentals scheme.

The original proposals were for metal fencing to improve security and peace of mind for the mainly elderly residents of the flats, however it was enhanced by inclusion of a CEP proposal for the estate alongside the wider regeneration scheme.

Working with NDC, Salix Homes and Salford City Council, Groundwork consulted the local community on the fencing and the landscaping, allowing individual residents to choose some of the soft planting works outside of their own homes. The planting chosen by residents, together with the improved security and new gardens, will provide a focal point for the community and will help to maximise the sense of local ownership. The result is a much enhanced scheme with landscaping works designed complementary to the new steel fencing.
