Young Woman Starts Childcare Career
After experiencing periods of unemployment, a local young woman approached the Skills and Work Centre for advice about careers within childcare. She had some experience working within elderly care but had decided that she really would be suited to working in childcare. She had no real idea of the options open to her. The staff were able to offer her careers guidance, and over a period of weeks helped her make decisions about her next steps. She was given help with interview preparation and with writing her CV. Regular attendance at the centre resulted in her starting work at a local Kids' Club and receiving training to NVQ level 2 in Childcare. She is now making good progress towards achieving her qualification and is enjoying her new career to the full.

Local man returns to work
After a 5-year period of unemployment due to ill health, a local resident in his early fifties approached the Skills and Work Centre for advice about returning to work. He was uncertain about opportunities available to him, was concerned how his health would affect his chances of employment, and was very nervous about returning to work. Staff offered guidance and support, and provided details on the New Deal for Disabled People scheme that offers practical help to individuals receiving incapacity benefit or disability related benefits. The client received ongoing help from an adviser, with weekly meetings to help with searching for jobs, completing application forms, practicing for interviews and building his confidence. The team was even able to help by accessing funding via Jobcentre Plus to buy interview clothes and pay for a return to work medical. The good news is that the client is now enjoying work and earning money to support his young family. He recently revisited the centre to thank the staff for their help and support.
