Lower Kersal - Estate and South East areas

Littleton Road private housing improvements

The area
This neighbourhood is characterised by the distinctive ‘Archway’ terraced properties and shops along lower Littleton Road and the 1930s built semi detached properties of the large Salix Homes managed Lower Kersal estate.

Both of these areas benefit from being adjacent to very large areas of green open space and proximity to the River Irwell. Littleton Road forms one of the primary access roads serving the area and has good transport links to wider Salford and Manchester.

Racecourse Pub

Immediately across the bridge over the River Irwell is one of the largest and most distinctive buildings in the area – the Racecourse pub and hotel.

Further down Littleton Road there are well tended allotments, a number of sports pitches, the Salford Sports Village (incorporating the regional headquarters of the FA) and the much valued neighbourhood park.

Local Amenities
The area is served by a very wide range of amenities. These include The Willow Tree healthy living centre and St Aidan’s church, Kersal Bowling club, Littleton Road allotments, the Racecourse pub, a variety of well used shops and food outlets, the Salford Sports Village, Riverbank Park and the Lower Kersal Community Centre together form a diverse range of amenities to serve a diverse local community.

NDC Activities

Community
Lower Kersal Family’s Club and Lower Kersal Action Group are the largest active residents groups in the area, supported by Community Worker Caroline Allport. Within the terraced streets, there are a number of highly active alleyway groups, supported by Community Worker Tony Roberts, that have been extremely effective in bringing residents together and turning the newly gated alleyways into green community spaces.

Lower Kersal Centre continues to be supported by the NDC programme as part of the Community Facilities Strategy.

Community Safety Initiatives
Work is on going with partners to improve safety and security of passageways on the Lower Kersal Estate. Alleygating has contributed to a substantial reduction in rates of burglary throughout the NDC area.

Children, Young People and Education
Young people have access to the Lower Kersal Primary school and the Albion High School.

A number of children’s play areas are within easy reach at Riverbank Park on Littleton Road, Kingsley Avenue, Strawberry Road,.Albion Community Garden on Seaford Road and Whit Lane,

Several playgroups, parent and toddler groups and out of school groups are active within the NDC area.

Young people can take part in a range of activities co-ordinated by Salford Youth Service and NDC at the nearby Beacon Centre on London Street, as well as at Lower Kersal Young People’s Group based at St Aidan’s Church, Oliver’s Youth Club off Langley Road, and the Amber Project based on Whit Lane.

Physical Environment
Over two hundred properties have been improved through comprehensive block improvement and alleygating schemes which have dramatically improved the appearance and desirability of housing in the area as well as improving the image and profile of the area as a whole.

Salford Sports Village and Riverbank Park are flagship projects for the whole area, both of which have improved leisure and open space for the local community.

The Matlock Cross scheme comprised extensive improvement works to an area of the Salix Homes managed Lower Kersal estate. There is a further phase under development.

One of the most significant projects to be undertaken will be the redevelopment of the Kersal Riverside site. Site investigations are underway.

Health
Residents in this area have access to three Healthy Living Centres within the NDC area which are based at:

Business, Employment & Skills
A number of shops have benefited from block improvement works and Business Improvement Grants which have assisted with the refurbishment of business properties within the area. These improvements have been successful in bringing life back to a neglected parade of shops, increasing the range of shops available to local people and encouraging shop owners to invest and improve their premises.

Business advice and training is also available from Salford Hundred Venture based off Frederick Road.
