Physical Environment & Housing Redevelopment

Charlestown and Lower Kersal are part of the ambitious regeneration plans to transform Salford into a thriving and propserous City.
Major transformation is underway across the NDC area to create a safe, healthy, clean and attractive environment where people want to stay, and in January 2004 a Development Framework was agreed which approves the development of many new homes in Charlestown Riverside and Lower Kersal. The Development Framework also makes it clear that for this to happen it would be necessary to demolish a small number of homes compared to the great many already improved and the new homes still to come. The NDC wants to make sure that when housing clearance takes place, residents are treated well and adequately compensated, and given the opportunity to stay in the NDC area with a range of incentives. A comprehensive Redevelopment Information Pack has been produced to explain to residents what is likely to happen and what choices are available. Supporting residents through the redevelopment is essential to help keep communities together and we will do this through Intensive Neighbourhood Management plans that have been worked up with residents and partner agencies.
2007 saw the start of the Masterplanning process for Charlestown Riverside which was an exciting opportunity for residents to work with the Developer Partner and the Design Team on the designs for the layout of the new development and the design of the new housing.

There’s also a whole range of other projects and initiatives that are taking place to improve housing and the environment across the area, which can be found on the left of this page.
To ensure that these projects run smoothly, there is a dedicated team responsible for the physical regeneration of the area. If you wish to speak to a member of the Physical Environment Team, please call 0161 607 8538 or 0161 607 8548.
