Physical Environment and Housing Redevelopment

aerial

Charlestown and Lower Kersal are part of the ambitious regeneration plans to transform Salford into a thriving and propserous City.

Major transformation is underway across the NDC area to create a safe, healthy, clean and attractive environment where people want to stay, and in January 2004 a Development Framework was agreed which approved the development of many new homes in Charlestown Riverside and Lower Kersal. The  Development Framework also made it clear that for this to happen it would be necessary to demolish a small number of homes compared to the great many already improved and the new homes still to come. The NDC wanted to make sure that when housing clearance took place, residents were treated well and adequately compensated, and given the opportunity to stay in the NDC area with a range of incentives. A comprehensive Redevelopment Information Packwas produced to explain to residents what was likely to happen and what choices were available. Supporting residents through the redevelopment was essential to help keep communities together and we will did this through Intensive Neighbourhood Management plans that were worked up with residents and partner agencies.

2007 saw the start of the Masterplanning process for Charlestown Riverside which was an exciting opportunity for residents to work with the Developer Partner and the Design Team on the designs for the layout of the new development and the design of the new housing. Demolition of the Littleton Rd terraces started in October 2009.

There’s also a whole range of other projects and initiatives that are taking place to improve housing and the environment across the area, which can be found on the left of this page.
