In 2001 Charlestown and Lower Kersal was deteriorating as a good place to live...

  • 61% of residents stated that the area was less safe than it was 2 years previously
  • Crime was the biggest single issue adversley affecting local businesses
  • 91% of residents rated children's play facilities as poor
  • 70% of residents stated that the area was deteriorating
  • Only 3 GPs were located in an area with nearly 10,000 residents
  • Less than one quarter of young people gained 5 or more GCSE A*-C
  • Less than a third of residents were satisfied with the area as a place to live

...but the people who lived there wanted to do something about it

"The area has a strong sense of community, people are there for each other. We don't want to see the good people moving out, which is what is happening"

The New Deal programme spent government money on improving the place and providing services for its residents. Everyone has worked together....

Now, people think the area is getting better

  • 73% of residents are satisfied with the area as a place to live - up from 32% at the start of the programme
  • 82% of residents feel that their quality of life is very or fairly good
  • 66% of residents feel that NDC has improved the area a great deal or a fair amount, a dramatic increase from 22% in 2002
  • 26% of residents who want to move, wish to stay in the NDC area compared to 6% at the start of the programme
  • 76% of residents say they feel safe in the New Deal area - better than the average fot the whole City
  • 80% of residents are satisfied with local health facilities, compared to 29% at the start of the NDC Programme

..but, there are still things that they think need to be done...

  • Improving pre-school nursery and childcare provision
  • Perception of local primary and secondary schools
  • Living accommodation
  • Environmental issues including litter, dogs, traffic
  • Employment and job opportunities

...including making sure that residents continue to feel that the area is a good place to live after New Deal is over.
