Whit Lane Environmental Improvements

This scheme encompasses an area of housing bounded by Whit Lane, Langley Road South and Owen Street of approximately 200 properties. There is a mix of houses and maisonette-type accommodation on the estate and prior to the improvement works, little or no provision of safe play areas or other amenity. Visually the estate suffered from boundary treatments in a poor condition affording poor enclosure and security for residents and their vehicles.

The improvement works comprised the provision of smart new metal driveway and pedestrian gates, the design of which is unique to the estate, improvements to boundary fencing, better parking provision and creation of attractive, useable open space surrounding the cottage flats. The scheme consolidates ‘Decent Homes’ work previously carried out on these properties.

The scheme was being delivered as a partnership between three agencies – New Deal for Communities, Salix Homes and Groundwork. A full door-to-door consultation was carried out in January 2006 and the works on site completed as of September 2007. Design services were provided by Urban Vision and the contractor was Horticon.
