Young Volunteers

You’re young. You’re bored. There’s nothing on TV. You want to do something but you’re not sure what.  Do you...

A.  Carry on watching TV anyway
B.  Go and get a part time job
C.  Join Young Volunteers and get involved in lots of free and exciting activities in the community that offer opportunity, challenges and rewards??

Of course, the answer's C!!

Who are we?

In case you haven’t heard of us, Young Volunteers (YVs) works with young people aged 13-15 years old in the Salford area who give up a little of their time to get involved in their local community

The project operates within two schools:

The Albion High School
All Hallows R.C. High School

Awards & Rewards….
Young Volunteers receive certificates for their time spent volunteering and work towards fantastic 25-hour ‘Silver Award’, 50-hour ‘Gold Award’ and 100-hour ‘Platinum Award’.

Recent happenings…
Since becoming YV co-ordinator, I’ve been busy arranging lots of activities for YVs to volunteer with to help build up their hours. Some of these include:

Easter Egg Bingo for the residents of Kersaldale Rest Home
Thanks to all those volunteers who came along to spread the Easter spirit amongst the residents of Kersaldale. Those with a good pair of lungs called numbers, gave away prizes and helped the residents throughout the festivities. Everyone really enjoyed themselves and the smiles on the residents’ faces were priceless.

Circus Workshops
YV’s have been getting adventurous on a recent Personal Development trip and learning circus skills as part of the Circus Zapparelli team! A great day had by all, and many undiscovered talents were revealed!

The Gemini Over 50’s Annual Lunch Event
YV’s recently helped out at St. Sebastians Community Centre serving a 3 course meal to the members of the community Gemini group. The event was a great success, with future work for the YV’s and Gemini group in the pipeline.

What people have to say about YV….
“Being a Young Volunteer is very fulfilling and gives you perspective – it shows you how to help other people around you”. Young Volunteer

“I think this project is an excellent way of providing opportunities for young people and keeps them off the streets”. Parent of a Young Volunteer

“I would like to say a big thank you for all their hard work and excellent manners with the Gemini group and staff. They could not do enough to help, and I had lots of great feedback from the residents. Because things went so well the group would like to do some further work with them”. Organiser of Gemini Annual Lunch Event

‘Fashion As Music’ Fashion Show

Whatever you’re into, it’s fashionable!

This summer Young Volunteers spent the holidays organising a fashion show which was held at The Lowry Theatre on Thursday 21st August. The show used fashion to break down the barriers between young people with different musical interests to promote inclusiveness, individuality and expression of self. It featured many different types of modern music, including hip hop, dance, indie, rock and pop. The Young Volunteers raised over £300 for Inscape House Salford, a Together Trust Service (Registered Charity No. 209782) working with children and young people with autistic spectrum disorders.
